How to use a hotel promo code (and why some don't work)

A valid code can still fail if a condition isn't met. Here's how to apply one correctly and diagnose the common reasons it bounces.

The basic steps

  • Sign in to the travel site first — many discounts only exist for logged-in users.
  • Open the deal from a tracked link so any automatic discount attaches.
  • Match the conditions: region, dates, minimum nights and room/rate type.
  • Paste the code in the promo box and confirm it shows as a line item before paying.

Why a code didn't work

  • It expired — check the 'last verified' date and expiry.
  • Wrong region — the code is valid only in certain markets.
  • Rate excluded — 'pay at hotel' or non-refundable rates often don't qualify.
  • First-time-only — some codes are limited to new accounts.

If it still fails

Try the member or signed-in rate instead — it's frequently a better deal than a code. And tell us, so we can re-verify and update the listing.
